Thunder sign Ochai Agbaji to their open 15th roster spot as injuries wipe out their wing rotation

Oklahoma City is filling its last standard roster spot with Ochai Agbaji, the former No. 14 pick waived by the Knicks, after injuries to Jalen Williams, Cason Wallace, Chet Holmgren and others.

The Oklahoma City Thunder are filling the open 15th spot on their standard roster with Ochai Agbaji, a move Oklahoma City had held off on until injuries took away most of their wing rotation. Michael Scotto first reported the plan on Friday, and Shams Charania reported minutes later that the deal was done.

Agbaji, 26, was the 14th pick in the 2022 draft out of Kansas. He has averaged 7.2 points over four seasons with Utah, Toronto and Brooklyn, and he was in training camp with New York this month on a non-guaranteed deal before the Knicks waived him on Oct. 15. Contract terms were not announced, but a minimum-salary deal is the expected structure for a player signed off the open market this late.

Why Oklahoma City needed him now

The Thunder started the season with only 14 players on standard contracts, keeping the last spot open for flexibility and to keep their luxury-tax bill down. That plan ran into a wall of injuries in the first two weeks:

  • Jalen Williams: surgery on a fractured left fibula and dislocated ankle, to be re-evaluated after the regular season
  • Cason Wallace: torn labrum in his left shoulder, out for months after surgery
  • Otega Oweh: season-ending Achilles tear in the preseason
  • Nikola Topić (low back surgery) and Thomas Sorber (right knee surgery): yet to play this season
  • Chet Holmgren: right knee patellar tendinitis, has missed the last two games
  • Alex Caruso: right ankle sprain, missed Wednesday’s game

Most of those absences hit the perimeter. Williams and Wallace were Oklahoma City’s two starting wings, and the team had already traded Luguentz Dort, Isaiah Joe and Aaron Wiggins over the summer. Ajay Mitchell and Jared McCain have moved into the starting lineup, and the Thunder fell to 4-1 on Wednesday when Dallas beat them 120-96.

What Agbaji brings

At 6-foot-5 with long arms, Agbaji has mostly been used as a defender who spaces the floor. His best season came in 2024-25 in Toronto, when he averaged 10.4 points and 3.8 rebounds, shot 39.9% from three and started 45 of his 64 games. Last season went the other way. Toronto traded him to Brooklyn at the February deadline in a cost-cutting deal, and he finished at 5.1 points per game while making only 26.6% of his threes. The Nets then chose not to make him a qualifying offer, which made him an unrestricted free agent.

The Thunder are betting that their system and his defense can get him back closer to the 2024-25 version. With so many players out, he could play rotation minutes right away.

The cap side: tax, apron and a hardship path

Oklahoma City is already over the luxury tax, so every dollar Agbaji earns adds to the tax bill. The Thunder were about $6.9 million below the second apron before the signing, Brett Siegel noted, so a minimum deal does not put that line at risk. Unless the team says otherwise, his salary is expected to be non-guaranteed until the league-wide guarantee date of Jan. 10, so the Thunder could still waive him at a small cost if their injured players return.

A full 15-man roster also opens another option. A team that has at least four players who have missed three straight games, and are expected to miss more, can apply for a hardship exception and carry a 16th player on 10-day contracts. Oklahoma City now meets the roster part of that rule. The Thunder still have rookie-scale option decisions on Topić and Sorber due by Monday, Nov. 2, and both carry tax costs of their own.
