Victor Wembanyama is averaging 29.1 points and 4.2 blocks, and no one has scored more than 27.7 in a four-block season, as the Spurs win seven straight

Wembanyama has 38 blocks in nine games, 14 more than anyone else, while scoring 29.1 a night. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s 27.7 in 1975-76 is the most points ever averaged in a four-block season.

Victor Wembanyama is averaging 29.1 points, 12.6 rebounds and 4.2 blocks through nine games, and San Antonio has won seven straight to reach 7-2. No player has ever averaged four blocks a game over a season while scoring more than 27.7 points a night, the mark Kareem Abdul-Jabbar set in 1975-76.

Wembanyama has 38 blocks. Nobody else in the league has more than 24, and eight teams have fewer in total. He added 30 points and 14 rebounds in Friday’s 124-109 NBA Cup win at Sacramento:

The numbers that stand out

  • His 4.2 blocks a game lead the NBA by 1.5 over Myles Turner (2.7). Walker Kessler and Donovan Clingan are next at 2.4, and Daniel Gafford is at 1.9
  • He has 262 points, 113 rebounds and 38 blocks in 31.0 minutes a game. That works out to 4.9 blocks per 36 minutes
  • He has blocked at least four shots in five of nine games, with eight against Dallas, six against both Oklahoma City and Minnesota, and five against Sacramento
  • He has scored 30 or more four times: 36 at Utah, 43 against Minnesota, 52 against Dallas and 30 at Sacramento
  • The Spurs lead the league with 7.0 blocks a game as a team, and Wembanyama has 38 of their 63 blocks, or 60.3 percent

The highest-scoring four-block seasons

Only 16 completed seasons have produced an average of 4.0 blocks or more on the single-season list kept by Basketball-Reference, which includes the ABA and counts blocks from 1973-74 on. Most belonged to rim protectors such as Mark Eaton, Manute Bol, Dikembe Mutombo, Tree Rollins, Elmore Smith and Caldwell Jones, none of whom averaged more than 15 points in those seasons. The top scorers among them:

Seasons with at least 4.0 blocks a game. Blocks became an official statistic in 1973-74.

Olajuwon came closest to Abdul-Jabbar’s mark from the other direction. He scored 27.3 points in 1993-94 and 27.8 in 1994-95, but his block averages fell to 3.7 and 3.4 in those seasons. Wembanyama’s own best full-season numbers before this one were 25.0 points and 11.5 rebounds last season and 3.8 blocks in 2024-25.

Where the line comes from

The jump from last season is mostly volume and minutes. Wembanyama played 29.2 minutes a game in 2025-26 and is at 31.0 now, and he is shooting 49.2 percent from the field. His three-point shot has not carried the scoring: he is 16 for 56 from deep, 28.6 percent, after 34.9 percent last season. More has come at the line, where he is making 6.2 free throws a game, including 19 of 23 in the 52-point game.

Nine games is a small sample, and his block total is boosted by the eight-block night. Without it he would still be at 3.8 a game, level with his career-best average from 2024-25. The scoring is the harder part to sustain: his career average is 23.7 points.

What’s next

The Spurs visit Portland on Saturday night looking for an eighth straight win. Wembanyama’s blocks lead is large enough that it would survive a quiet week; his scoring average is the number to watch, with Luka Dončić at 40.1 and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Stephen Curry at 29.9 just ahead of him.
