  • Across the last five full seasons, the lowest team assist rate was Houston’s 54.8 percent in 2024-25. Oklahoma City is already a point below that floor while sitting at .750

The five lowest and five highest assist rates in the NBA through Thursday’s games. Assist rate is assists divided by made field goals.

How low 53.9 percent really is

Assist rate has climbed in the half-court era of threes and drive-and-kick. League average over a full season sat between 58 and 61 percent for most of the 2010s, then jumped to 63.2 in 2023-24 and 63.7 in each of the last two seasons. Early this year it is 65.0.

2022-23NY Knicks47-3554.5%

2024-25HOU Rockets52-3054.8%
2025-26BOS Celtics56-2658.4%

Full-season team lows from Basketball-Reference, 2021-22 through 2025-26. No team finished below 54.4 percent in that span.

Ten full-season teams since 2014-15 finished at 53.9 percent or lower and still won at least half their games. The most recent was Portland in the shortened 2020-21 season at 51.6 percent. No team has done it in a full 82-game season since the 2017-18 Trail Blazers and Thunder, both in the low 53s. Oklahoma City’s own recent history sits in that group: 52.8 percent with a 45-37 record in 2014-15, then 53.2 and 53.4 in 2016-17 and 2017-18.

Atlanta is the other extreme

The Hawks are assisting on 72.5 percent of their makes, which would clear every full-season high of the last five years. Golden State’s 71.3 percent last season and San Antonio’s 71.4 percent in 2023-24 were the recent peaks. Atlanta is at 31.0 assists a game with Jalen Johnson at 7.9 assists in seven games, Dyson Daniels at 4.7 and Kingston Flemings at 4.6.

The 18.6-point gap from first to last is wider than every full-season gap of the last five years except 2016-17, when Toronto’s 47.2 percent and Golden State’s 70.5 percent were 23.3 points apart. Last season’s full-season spread was 12.2 points.

Winning while finishing alone

A low assist rate is not an automatic warning. Those older Thunder and Trail Blazers teams won with isolation scoring, and this Oklahoma City group is 6-2 with a plus-1.3 point differential. The offense ranks near the middle of the league at 108.0 points per 100 possessions, and the defense is 106.8.

What is new is the combination of a sub-54 percent rate and a winning record in an era when almost nobody finishes a season that low. Five of Oklahoma City’s eight games have come without Holmgren. In those five, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is at 31.6 points and 4.8 assists a game, and the team assist rate is 52.0 percent. The three games with Holmgren are a cleaner 57.0 percent.

What’s next

Oklahoma City plays at Memphis on Friday night, a 6-2 matchup. Atlanta hosts Washington in an NBA Cup group game. Eight and nine games are still a small sample, but the extremes are already past every full-season floor and ceiling of the last half-decade.
