SAN ANTONIO — Oct. 15, 2026 — Three seasons into his NBA career, Victor Wembanyama has finished first in blocked shots every single time. The San Antonio Spurs center swatted 197 shots in 2025-26 and averaged 3.1 blocks a night, topping the league in both the total and the per-game table for the third straight year, per Basketball-Reference.

He did it in 64 games, and still finished 44 blocks clear of the next-best total in the league. That gap is the story of the 2025-26 defensive leaderboard, and it is a big reason he walked away with Defensive Player of the Year.

Three seasons, three blocks titles

  • 2023-24 (rookie): 254 blocks in 71 games, 3.6 per game
  • 2024-25: 176 blocks in 46 games, 3.8 per game
  • 2025-26: 197 blocks in 64 games, 3.1 per game

Add it up and Wembanyama has 627 blocks in 181 regular-season games, or roughly 3.46 per game for his career so far. His 2024-25 season was cut to 46 games, and he still led the league in both columns.

How far ahead of the field he finished

The 2025-26 total-blocks leaderboard, per Basketball-Reference:

  • Victor Wembanyama, Spurs: 197
  • Jay Huff, Pacers: 153
  • Chet Holmgren, Thunder: 131
  • Donovan Clingan, Trail Blazers: 130
  • Rudy Gobert, Timberwolves: 124

The per-game race was even more lopsided. Wembanyama’s 3.1 was 1.2 blocks better than the 1.9 posted by both Holmgren and Huff. Evan Mobley and Clingan were next at 1.7. Huff’s jump to second in total blocks is its own quiet surprise for a center who went undrafted out of Virginia in 2021.

Not just a shot-blocker

The blocks came with a full two-way line: 25.0 points, 11.5 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 1.0 steal in 29.2 minutes, on 51.2 percent shooting from the field and 34.9 percent from three. He also led the league in defensive win shares (5.0) and defensive box plus/minus (4.2), and ranked third in player efficiency rating at 29.9 behind Nikola Jokić and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.

That season earned him Defensive Player of the Year, a first-team All-NBA spot, first-team All-Defense, an All-Star nod and a third-place MVP finish. He was also named Western Conference finals MVP in the spring.

What to watch in 2026-27

The Spurs open the regular season next week, and the blocks race resets with it. The question is less whether Wembanyama can win a fourth straight blocks title than whether he can stay on the floor long enough to push his total back toward the 254 he posted as a rookie. WhyNBA’s league-leaders and stats pages will track the 2026-27 numbers from opening night.
