The Golden State Warriors released guard Miles Kelly on Sunday, October 11, and used the open camp spot on free agent forward Tyler Burton, the club said in a statement.

The move reshuffles the bottom of a training camp roster with opening night less than two weeks away. Golden State did not disclose what kind of contract Burton signed, citing team policy, so it is not yet known whether his deal carries any guaranteed money or is built to send him to the club’s G League affiliate later.

The team posted the news through its public relations account on X, with the full release attached.

Kelly’s short audition

Kelly, 23, joined the Warriors on September 27 and came off the bench in three preseason games. In just 13.8 minutes a night he scored 10.7 points per game and chipped in 2.3 boards and 2.3 assists apiece, a productive rate for a camp invite, though he did not see the floor in Saturday’s 111-106 win over the Sacramento Kings at Chase Center.

It is the second time this calendar year that Kelly has been let go to make room on a roster. The Dallas Mavericks waived him on March 1 so they could hand a two-way contract to Tyler Smith, according to transaction records. Golden State has not said whether it intends to keep his rights with its minor league club.

Who Tyler Burton is

Burton, 26, went undrafted in 2024 after five college seasons, the first four at Richmond and the last at Villanova. Across 157 college games, 127 of them starts, he averaged 12.0 points and 6.5 rebounds.

He spent the past two seasons in the Memphis Grizzlies organization. With the Memphis Hustle he played 37 games, starting 29, and put up 16.6 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.1 assists in 28.2 minutes. His NBA chance arrived in the spring, when the Grizzlies gave him a first 10-day deal on March 12 and then a second. In 12 NBA appearances, all as a reserve, he averaged 10.8 points and 4.2 rebounds while playing 25.6 minutes a game.

His arrival gives the Warriors one more forward to evaluate in the final week of the preseason, after a rookie season in which he played meaningful minutes whenever Memphis called on him.

What comes next

The Warriors visit the Los Angeles Lakers for a preseason game on Tuesday, October 13, at 10 p.m. ET. Follow it in the Warriors-Lakers Game Center, and keep up with every signing and release on the transactions page.
