The Boston Celtics beat the Charlotte Hornets 114-93 at TD Garden on Wednesday, October 14, turning 30 Charlotte turnovers into a comfortable preseason win. Jayson Tatum led Boston with 19 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists and 2 steals in 29 minutes, and Derrick White added 17 points and 4 steals.
Boston led 54-44 at halftime. Charlotte won the third quarter 33-31 to stay within 85-77, but the Celtics closed with a 29-16 fourth quarter and led by as many as 23.
The bench and the paint
Neemias Queta was the story off the bench with 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting and a plus-16, including his first poster of the season. Luka Garza scored 14 in 14 minutes and had 3 steals, and Mitchell Robinson went 5-for-5 for 12 points with 7 rebounds and 3 blocks. Payton Pritchard scored 7 and handed out 11 assists, and Sam Hauser was a game-best plus-23.
Boston outscored Charlotte 56-20 in the paint, made 31 assists and collected 16 steals. The Celtics made only 11 of 39 threes, and Paul George went 2-of-10 for 5 points, though he added 6 rebounds, 4 assists and a behind-the-back pass to Tatum.
Charlotte’s side
The Hornets actually shot better from deep, 16-of-42, but the turnovers sank them. Brandon Miller scored 16 on 4-of-17 shooting, Tidjane Salaun made 4 of 8 threes for 16, and Royce O’Neale went 4-for-4 from three for 12 points but also had 5 turnovers. Naz Reid scored 12 on 4-of-14 shooting, Christian Anderson added 10 and Ryan Kalkbrenner made all 3 of his shots for 7.
