LeBron Raymone James (born December 30, 1984) is an American professional basketball player who plays as a forward for the Philadelphia 76ers of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Nicknamed "LBJ" and "King James", he is the NBA's all-time leading scorer and has won four NBA championships from 10 NBA Finals appearances, including eight consecutive appearances between 2011 and 2018. He has won three Olympic gold medals as a member of the U.S. national team. James is widely regarded as one of the greatest basketball players of all time, with frequent debates over whether he or Michael Jordan is the greatest ever.
James ranks fourth in NBA career assists and sixth in NBA career steals, and has won four NBA MVP awards, four Finals MVP awards, three All-Star Game MVP awards, the Rookie of the Year award, the inaugural NBA Cup MVP, and the Olympics MVP. He has been selected for the All-Star roster a record 22-times; for the All-NBA Team 21 times, including for the First Team a record 13 times; and for the All-Defensive Team six times. The oldest active player in the NBA, he holds league records for the most seasons played with 23, the most games played, the most minutes played, and the most field goals.
Born and raised in Akron, Ohio, James gained national attention at St. Vincent–St. Mary High School and was heavily touted as a future NBA superstar for his all-around scoring, passing, athleticism and playmaking abilities. A prep-to-pro, the Cleveland Cavaliers selected James with the first overall pick of the 2003 NBA draft. He won Rookie of the Year and quickly established himself as one of the league's premier players, leading Cleveland to its first NBA Finals appearance in 2007 and winning the scoring title in 2008. After winning back-to-back MVPs in 2009 and 2010, he joined the Miami Heat as a free agent in 2010, a controversial move announced in the television special The Decision.

LeBron James is a useful player to study for the connection between scoring and decision-making. Watch how he reads the help defense before a drive, changes pace, and finds a teammate when a second defender commits. His passing can organize an entire possession even when he does not record the final assist.
Compare possessions where he handles the ball at the top with possessions where he operates closer to the basket. The defender’s starting position changes the passing angles and the space available to teammates.
Read a player’s statistics alongside minutes, role, opponent, and competition. One night or a short stretch can produce a misleading impression. Use the official player profile for current team information and verified season numbers, then connect those numbers to the possessions you watch.
Profile analysis expanded October 2, 2026 (Eastern Time).
James won Finals MVP with Miami in 2012 and 2013, Cleveland in 2016, and the Lakers in 2020. Those championship years provide useful reference points when using this page’s season-by-season tables: compare the same competition, rather than mixing a regular-season scoring average with a playoff average.
Viewing guide: Begin with where James receives the ball. A catch near the elbow shortens his path to the rim but also brings help defenders closer. A catch above the three-point line gives a cutting teammate more space behind the defense. When he sets a screen instead of handling the ball, follow the defender who switches onto him and whether that creates a mismatch near the basket.
An assist records the pass immediately before a made basket. It does not capture every useful decision: an early pass can force a rotation that produces the eventual shot two passes later. To evaluate a quieter scoring night, look at the quality of the openings created as well as the final points and assists.
