PORTLAND — Oct. 5, 2026 — Scoot Henderson remains a high-priority extension candidate for the Portland Trail Blazers with the rookie-scale deadline days away. General manager Joe Cronin said there has been “dialogue and seemingly mutual interest” on a deal that works for both sides, while stressing the talks are tricky for a high-variance young guard. The window for a 2023 first-rounder to sign a rookie-scale extension closes Monday, Oct. 19, at 5 p.m. Central. If nothing is done, Henderson heads toward restricted free agency in summer 2027.

OregonLive’s Joe Freeman reported Cronin’s comments from media day. Cronin called Henderson “definitely a high-priority player” and said he would love to keep him long term, but also that he would not be overly concerned if the deal slips into next offseason. Henderson, the No. 3 pick in 2023, said he is leaving negotiations to his agent, Klutch Sports’ Rich Paul, and that he wants to stay in Portland.

Why the number is hard

Henderson’s 2025-26 line — 14.2 points, 3.7 assists and 2.7 rebounds in a season shortened by a hamstring tear — mixed with a playoff surge against San Antonio, when he scored 70 points over the first three games of the series. That ceiling is what Portland is buying; the inconsistency is what makes a long guarantee expensive. Cap analysts have floated mid-teen annual starts as a realistic band, closer to taxpayer mid-level money than to the five-year, $110 million Brandin Podziemski deal or the larger packages already locked in by Victor Wembanyama, Amen Thompson, Ausar Thompson and Keyonte George.

What the deadline means

Rookie-scale extensions for this class must be finished by Oct. 19 or the conversation pauses through the regular season. Portland already carries Ja Morant, Jrue Holiday and Toumani Camara’s four-year, $81 million deal on the books, so any Scoot number has to fit a crowded, costly backcourt. First-year coach Micah Nori has praised Henderson’s camp work and compared his two-way burst to a Russell Westbrook-style impact when he is rolling — language that helps Henderson’s leverage even as it complicates Cronin’s math.

With less than a week left in the window, the Blazers’ choice is clear: bet now on the playoff version of Scoot, or wait and risk a higher restricted-free-agency price next summer.
