Kawhi Leonard. Image: licensed from BasketAPI.The Raptors expect to be without Kawhi Leonard for a period of weeks because of swelling in his left knee, Shams Charania reported. Toronto said in a press release Tuesday that Leonard will undergo treatment and a rehab program after imaging showed no acute injury in the knee, and that the team will re-evaluate him in one week.
Leonard, 35, was ruled out for Sunday’s game in Minnesota with the swelling. He played in Toronto’s first two games of the season, averaging 3.5 steals in 26.0 minutes while shooting 32.4% from the floor, as the Raptors opened 2-0.
The Raptors acquired Leonard from the Clippers in a September trade that followed a lengthy delay during the NBA’s investigation into salary-cap circumvention by Los Angeles. Toronto ramped him up slowly in the preseason, and he appeared in two of the team’s five exhibition games.
Based on the one-week re-evaluation timeline, Leonard will miss at least Toronto’s next four games: home dates with Orlando on Wednesday and Friday, a visit to the Lakers on Sunday and a game against the Clippers at Intuit Dome on Monday, the Raptors’ only trip there this season. Charania’s reporting suggests he could miss additional games beyond those four.
Third-year wing Ja’Kobe Walter entered the starting lineup Sunday in Leonard’s place. Rookie forward Allen Graves and veteran Kyle Anderson are among the others who figure to move up Toronto’s depth chart.
