The Trail Blazers have waived forward Jeremy Sochan, the team announced Friday. Sochan, who was on a non-guaranteed Exhibit 9 contract, will become an unrestricted free agent on Monday if he goes unclaimed on waivers. The move leaves Portland with 17 players under contract: 14 on standard deals and three on two-way pacts.

Sochan, 23, was the ninth overall pick in the 2022 draft and spent his first three and a half NBA seasons with the Spurs, averaging at least 11 points per game in each of his first three campaigns while San Antonio experimented with his role, using him at times as a point guard or small-ball center.

He fell out of the rotation in 2025/26 and was granted his release after the trade deadline, signing with the Knicks. He played sparingly in New York, averaging 6.9 minutes per game across 16 regular season appearances and 3.3 minutes in eight playoff games, but won his first NBA championship when the Knicks beat his former team in the Finals. Across 228 career regular season games, Sochan has averaged 9.9 points, 5.4 rebounds and 2.5 assists on .470/.286/.725 shooting.

The decision is a mild surprise given Portland’s thin forward depth behind starters Deni Avdija and Toumani Camara. Sochan shot .625 from the field while playing 12.2 minutes per game across four preseason appearances. Rather than converting his camp deal to a standard contract and keeping him as the 15th man, the Blazers appear set to open the regular season with an open roster spot.
