Jaren Jackson Jr. has been diagnosed with a torn MCL in his right knee and is expected to miss approximately six to eight weeks, Shams Charania and Tim MacMahon reported. He will not need surgery to repair the tear.

Jackson was hurt early in the second quarter of Monday’s loss to Memphis when Grizzlies guard Ty Jerome fell into his right knee after driving to the basket. Jackson stayed in the game for one more possession before checking out and being ruled out for the night.

The diagnosis is another blow for a Jazz team hoping to contend for a playoff spot after a long rebuild. Utah acquired Jackson at last season’s trade deadline to pair with Lauri Markkanen, but Jackson played only three games for his new team before season-ending knee surgery in February, and he now faces another lengthy absence four games into this season.

In three full games this fall, Jackson averaged 19.7 points, 5.7 rebounds and 1.7 blocks in 31.3 minutes per game on .513/.417/.778 shooting. Utah went 1-2 in those games and is 1-3 after Monday’s loss.

Markkanen also left Monday’s game early with a right wrist injury. The Jazz have not yet announced the results of his MRI.
