Tre Johnson and Will Riley each scored 15 points as the Washington Wizards beat the Detroit Pistons 114-108 in overtime at Capital One Arena on October 10. Washington won the extra period 16-10 after the teams finished regulation tied at 98.

The official NBA box score records Johnson making four of his six three-point attempts. Riley went 8-of-8 at the free-throw line and added four rebounds and three assists. AJ Dybantsa and Kyshawn George each scored 14 points for Washington.

Detroit recovers from an early deficit

Washington led 40-20 after the first quarter, but Detroit cut the gap to six points at halftime. The Wizards were ahead 80-78 through three quarters before Detroit drew level in the fourth. Washington then scored six more points than the Pistons in overtime to secure the preseason win.

Ebuka Okorie led Detroit with 14 points and six assists. Duncan Robinson and Daniss Jenkins each scored 12 points, while Paul Reed finished with 11 points and nine rebounds.

Free throws help Washington overcome turnovers

The Wizards made 38 of 51 free throws, compared with Detroit’s 18-of-25 performance. Washington shot 46.5 percent from the field; the Pistons shot 36.8 percent and made 12 of their 48 three-point attempts.

Washington also recorded 10 blocks, including three by George. The win came despite 29 total team turnovers, so the result was not a clean offensive performance. As with any preseason game, the final score and individual minutes do not establish either team’s regular-season rotation.
