The Utah Jazz are an American professional basketball team based in Salt Lake City. The Jazz compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member of the Northwest Division of the Western Conference. Since the 1991–92 season, the team has played its home games at the Delta Center, an arena they share with the Utah Mammoth of the National Hockey League (NHL). The franchise began as an expansion team in the 1974–75 season as the New Orleans Jazz, paying homage to New Orleans as the origin and cultural center of the jazz music genre. The Jazz relocated from New Orleans to Salt Lake City on June 8, 1979.
The Jazz were one of the least successful teams in the league in their early years as an expansion team. Although 10 seasons elapsed before the Jazz qualified for their first playoff appearance in 1984, they did not miss the playoffs again until 2004.
During the late 1980s, John Stockton and Karl Malone arose as the franchise players for the team and formed one of the most famed pick and roll duos in NBA history. Led by Hall of Fame coach Jerry Sloan, who took over from Frank Layden in 1988, they became one of the powerhouse teams of the 1990s, culminating in two NBA Finals appearances in 1997 and 1998, where they lost both times to the Michael Jordan led Chicago Bulls.

The Jazz name reflects the franchise’s New Orleans origins before its move to Utah in 1979. In Salt Lake City, the team built a distinct identity and a long history of competitive basketball. The John Stockton and Karl Malone era is an important reference point for studying the pick-and-roll and long-running partnerships.
Delta Center and Vivint Arena refer to the same building, which opened in 1991. Older Jazz reports may also call it EnergySolutions Arena or Vivint Smart Home Arena. Those names track sponsorship changes, so a different name in a game recap does not necessarily mean the team moved.
The naming sequence is Delta Center from 1991, EnergySolutions Arena from November 2006, Vivint Smart Home Arena from October 2015, and the shorter Vivint Arena from September 2020. The Delta Center name returned on July 1, 2023. The venue hosted the 1993 NBA All-Star Weekend and the Jazz’s home games in the 1997 and 1998 NBA Finals.
The Salt Palace was a different arena. Utah left it for the new Delta Center for the 1991–92 season. That was the building change to distinguish from the later renamings. For an upcoming game, follow the venue on the Jazz schedule; an archive’s arena name describes the setting at the time.
Updated October 6, 2026. Utah signed forward Taylor Funk on October 5.
The Salt Lake City Stars had already acquired his G League rights from San Diego on August 24, sending the rights to Max Abmas and Daniel Batcho in return. That earlier trade concerned G League rights; it was not the Jazz signing.
Funk averaged 11.3 points, 4.4 rebounds and 2.1 assists across 41 games for San Diego in 2025–26. His path also included Saint Joseph’s and Utah State before going undrafted in 2023. An NBA signing alone does not confirm an opening-night role. Follow the current roster and Jazz schedule for the team’s next stage.
Start with the official team schedule and roster to understand the current group. Then compare the team’s pace, shot selection, and defensive approach with its opponents. The meaning of a result changes with the matchup, the available lineup, and the season context.
