NBA injury news before Wednesday: Thunder sign Dalen Terry as three starters stay out, Max Christie hurts his hip and Kon Knueppel is ‘right around the corner’

The Thunder filled their open roster spot with Dalen Terry as Holmgren, Williams and Wallace stay out, Dallas's Max Christie left Monday's game with a hip injury, and Charlotte's Kon Knueppel could return Wednesday, with the lists for the 14 Wednesday games due at midnight in Cairo.

The Oklahoma City Thunder signed Dalen Terry on Tuesday to fill the 15th roster spot they had held open since losing Chet Holmgren, and Dallas does not yet know how long Max Christie will be out with a hip injury. Charlotte’s Kon Knueppel is close to a return that could come as early as Wednesday. None of Wednesday’s 14 teams had filed an injury list when the league’s report last updated, and those lists are due at 5 p.m. local time, which is midnight in Cairo, so this is what has changed since our Tuesday injury report.

Thunder sign Dalen Terry as three starters stay out

Terry, a guard-forward who is entering his fifth NBA season, agreed to a two-year contract, Shams Charania reported. The 18th pick in the 2022 draft has played for Chicago and Philadelphia and went to training camp with Golden State last month, then left the Warriors’ G League team in Santa Cruz to join Oklahoma City. The signing is a change of direction for the Thunder, who were reported on Oct. 31 to be stepping back from a deal with free agent Ochai Agbaji to “re-evaluate” the spot after Holmgren’s injury.

Charania added a number that explains the move: the Thunder are the first team in 50 years to have three starters hurt in the same game, Jalen Williams, Holmgren and Cason Wallace on Oct. 25, and then have all three miss the team’s next 20 games or more. Oklahoma City is 5-2 after Monday’s 117-112 win at Cleveland, when Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 43, and it hosts the Cavaliers on Wednesday in a rematch. Our recap of that game has the full list of who was out.

Where each of the injured Thunder players stands now:

  • Chet Holmgren: a small tear in his right patellar tendon, treated on Oct. 31, with a return expected in eight to 10 weeks, which points to between the last week of December and the second week of January.
  • Jalen Williams: a fractured left fibula and a dislocated ankle that required surgery, with Sam Presti saying on Oct. 26 that a timeline would come after the operation. Zach Lowe said Tuesday that he is not closing the door on Williams returning for the playoffs, based on what he has heard, until the Thunder publicly close it.
  • Cason Wallace: a torn labrum in his left shoulder, repaired by surgery on Oct. 30, with a re-evaluation before the end of the regular season.
  • Alex Caruso: a right ankle sprain, and Tuesday’s fantasy-basketball updates describe him as not expected to be out long term, though Oklahoma City has not given a return date.

Max Christie leaves Dallas’s loss with a hip injury

Christie left Monday’s 115-100 loss to Sacramento with what was reported as a hip injury and did not play the second half. Dusty May said the Mavericks would evaluate him Tuesday and again “in the next couple days.” That makes him a real question for Wednesday’s trip to San Antonio, where Dallas is already without Kyrie Irving (left knee injury management) for what would be a third missed game of the season if he sits again. May was also asked about Cooper Flagg grabbing his shoulder late in the game and said, “I didn’t see that.” Flagg scored 17 on 3-of-19 shooting.

Kon Knueppel is ‘right around the corner’

Charlotte coach Charles Lee said before Monday’s loss to Detroit that Kon Knueppel has no specific return date but is “right behind” Coby White and “right around the corner.” Rod Boone reported that Knueppel, who has missed the season so far with a left hamstring strain, was out warming up in his usual pregame slot, normally the last step before a return, and finished his workout with a dunk.

Boone’s guess is Wednesday at Brooklyn, and Friday against Boston if not. Charlotte has lost four straight since a 3-1 start. Grant Williams, out with a right hamstring strain, remains out.

Notes from Monday that matter for Wednesday

76ers: Jaylen Brown had 25 points and 11 rebounds in the win over Chicago and said afterward that he has not felt like his normal athletic self to start the season, citing his knee, Achilles and calf. “Nothing to be overly concerned about,” he said. Joel Embiid sat the last 15 or 16 minutes of the blowout, and Nick Nurse said the team is managing his foot: “Yeah, he’s okay.” Philadelphia, 7-1, visits 6-1 Detroit on Wednesday.

Magic: Franz Wagner said his knee is “all good” after he bumped it with Anthony Davis in Monday’s loss to Washington. Orlando is off on Wednesday.

Houston: Steven Adams (right soleus strain) is out, and Ime Udoka gave no timeline, saying the injury takes away the two-big lineup he prefers.

Return watch: timelines teams have given

These are the specific timelines given so far, with the date each was stated:

  • Anthony Edwards (Minnesota, right knee arthroscopy): out for about two more weeks, according to teammate Ayo Dosunmu on Oct. 29, which points to the middle of November.
  • Paolo Banchero (Orlando, right high ankle sprain): at least a month from Oct. 25, by his own account, which is about Nov. 22.
  • Gui Santos (Golden State, left knee tendinitis): reevaluated over the next few days, Steve Kerr said Nov. 1. The Warriors are off on Wednesday.
  • Adou Thiero (Lakers, knee): J.J. Redick hopes he is available by the end of the week, with Los Angeles at Sacramento on Wednesday.
  • Brandon Ingram (Clippers, right heel surgery): no timeline, and assistant Brian Shaw said Nov. 2 that he will “hopefully be back soon.”

What comes next

The official lists for Wednesday’s games are due at midnight in Cairo and will settle whether Christie can play in San Antonio, whether Knueppel is cleared for Brooklyn and who from the Thunder, Pacers and Raptors is available. Our next injury report will have those statuses, and the injuries page tracks every team’s latest list. Earlier context on Oklahoma City’s injuries is in our Saturday injury report.
