Saturday NBA injury report: Chet Holmgren out 8 to 10 weeks with a patellar tendon tear, Jaylon Tyson out and Lauri Markkanen questionable

The Thunder say Chet Holmgren will miss eight to 10 weeks after treatment for a small patellar tendon tear, Cleveland has ruled out Jaylon Tyson, and Lauri Markkanen is questionable for Utah against a Portland team without Ja Morant.

Oklahoma City’s injury list got much longer on Friday night. The Thunder said Chet Holmgren had a biological treatment on Friday for a small tear in his right patellar tendon and is expected to return in eight to 10 weeks. That takes him out of Saturday’s game in Houston and, on that timeline, into January. Cleveland ruled out Jaylon Tyson with a right ankle sprain for its game in Milwaukee, and Utah lists Lauri Markkanen as questionable with his sprained right wrist for the 3 p.m. ET game against Portland, which is without Ja Morant.

Statuses below are from the league’s 1:15 a.m. ET report on Saturday and can still change before tip-off. Philadelphia, Charlotte, Minnesota and Houston, who all played on Friday and are on the second night of a back-to-back, had not filed yet. Times are Eastern. Cairo is six hours ahead of New York until the U.S. clock change on Sunday, so Trail Blazers at Jazz tips at 9 p.m. Saturday in Cairo, and the other six games run from midnight to 2:30 a.m. Sunday.

Thunder at Rockets, 8:30 p.m. ET: Holmgren out eight to 10 weeks

According to the Thunder, Holmgren first felt mild discomfort in his right knee on Oct. 25. After a series of consultations with specialists, the team decided on a biological treatment for a small patellar tendon tear, which was done on Friday. The Thunder called the treatment successful and said they expect him to make a full recovery. He was listed with right knee patellar tendinitis while missing the last two games, including Wednesday’s 120-96 loss in Dallas.

The same release said Cason Wallace had successful surgery on Friday on the labral tear in his left shoulder. Dr. Neal ElAttrache did the procedure at the Cedars-Sinai Kerlan-Jobe Institute in Los Angeles, and Wallace will be re-evaluated before the end of the regular season. Shams Charania pointed out that Holmgren’s knee discomfort started on the same day, and in the same game, as the injuries to Wallace and Jalen Williams, who is out after left ankle surgery.

Oklahoma City’s Saturday report also has Alex Caruso out with his right ankle sprain, plus Nikola Topić (low back surgery) and Thomas Sorber (right knee surgery). The Thunder signed Ochai Agbaji on Friday to fill their open 15th roster spot.

Houston has not filed its report yet. Alperen Sengun sat out Friday with low back soreness, his second straight missed game, as Dallas handed the Rockets their first loss, 116-111. Reed Sheppard (low back soreness) and Steven Adams (right soleus strain) were also out. Marcus Smart played 17 minutes after being questionable with a left forearm strain, and Kevin Durant played 37.

Trail Blazers at Jazz, 3 p.m. ET: Markkanen questionable, Morant out

Markkanen sat out Wednesday’s overtime loss to San Antonio after spraining his right wrist on Monday. He is questionable, and Jazz beat writer JP Chunga reported that he took part in practice on Friday. Jaren Jackson Jr. (torn right MCL) and Jusuf Nurkić (right foot plantar plate tear) are out.

Portland ruled out Morant, who has a Grade 2 left hamstring strain and will be re-evaluated in four weeks, and Shaedon Sharpe (right meniscus surgery). Robert Williams III (left knee injury management) and Chris Youngblood (left ankle soreness) are questionable.

Cavaliers at Bucks, 8 p.m. ET: Tyson out

Tyson played 18 minutes in Thursday’s 114-111 loss in Atlanta while listed as questionable with a cervical strain. He is now out with a right ankle sprain. Meleek Thomas, who missed Thursday with a right foot injury, is questionable with right foot inflammation and soreness. Nae’Qwan Tomlin (low back stress reaction) is out, and Khalifa Diop is on a G League assignment. Milwaukee has nobody on its report.

Hawks at Pelicans, 7 p.m. ET: Poole out again

New Orleans has Jordan Poole out for a second straight game with his left ankle sprain, along with Yves Missi (left knee contusion and bone bruise). Atlanta lists Jock Landale as available with his nasal fracture. Mouhamed Gueye (left foot fracture) and Henri Veesaar (right ACL tear) are out.

Kings at Grizzlies, 8 p.m. ET

Unbeaten Memphis lists Ty Jerome (upper back soreness) and Scotty Pippen Jr. (low back soreness) as questionable and Quinten Post (right ankle sprain) as doubtful. Winless Sacramento has Keegan Murray (left ankle capsulitis), Dylan Cardwell (left calf strain), Maxime Raynaud (right patella subluxation) and Ben Simmons (right Achilles tendon repair) out.

Timberwolves at Spurs and 76ers at Hornets

San Antonio ruled out Tobias Harris (left calf strain) again, so he still has not made his Spurs debut. Jayden Quaintance (right knee surgery) is also out. Minnesota had not filed yet. The Wolves are without Anthony Edwards, who had a procedure on his right knee on Thursday, and they beat the Clippers 127-101 without him on Friday.

Philadelphia and Charlotte, who play each other at 6 p.m. ET, are the other two teams on the second night of a back-to-back, and neither had filed by early Saturday. The Sixers beat the Knicks 98-93 on Friday with Joel Embiid playing 33 minutes and Tyrese Maxey 38, while Jaylen Brown was out with left patellar tendinopathy. Charlotte lost 95-79 in Washington, and Dennis Schröder played 29 minutes after being upgraded to probable with right foot inflammation.

Friday night: who played

Luka Dončić was back from his one-game rest and scored 37 points in 37 minutes as the Lakers lost 112-95 at Golden State. The Lakers ruled out Ziaire Williams for a second straight game with soreness in his left foot. Washington’s Tre Johnson played 13 minutes after being questionable with right Achilles soreness, Denver’s Cameron Johnson played 34 minutes on his sprained right ankle, and the Clippers’ Rui Hachimura played 26.

Chicago’s Patrick Williams said on Friday morning that he would be available, but he did not play and was listed as a coach’s decision. K.C. Johnson reported Williams’ comments about being out of the rotation. Detroit’s Isaiah Joe (right hip contusion) was out, and Indiana’s Obi Toppin did not play with lower back soreness. Friday’s report has the full pregame lists.

What comes next

The four back-to-back teams should file later on Saturday, and the biggest question is whether Sengun and Smart play against the short-handed Thunder. Sunday’s eight teams (Celtics at Magic, Nets at Pacers, Clippers at Warriors and Raptors at Lakers) file Saturday afternoon. Further ahead: Raynaud’s re-evaluation is due in early November, Jalen Suggs’ around Nov. 9, Tyrese Haliburton’s around Nov. 11, and Kawhi Leonard is expected to miss about three to four weeks.
