Jayson Tatum’s game is a useful starting point for studying the responsibilities of a high-usage scoring wing. Perimeter creation, driving angles, post positioning, and passing against help can appear within the same stretch of possessions.
Compare the shot opportunities he creates against different matchups. A smaller defender, a switch, or early help can change whether the best next action is a drive, a shot, or a pass.
Read a player’s statistics alongside minutes, role, opponent, and competition. One night or a short stretch can produce a misleading impression. Use the official player profile for current team information and verified season numbers, then connect those numbers to the possessions you watch.
Tatum’s 2017 ACC tournament offered an early example of carrying a major workload through consecutive high-pressure games. He led Duke with averages of 22.0 points and 7.5 rebounds as the Blue Devils won four games in four days to claim the championship. Boston selected him third in that summer’s draft. As a rookie, he started 80 games and made 43.4 percent of his three-point attempts. His introduction to the Boston Celtics therefore involved both substantial playing time and an immediate shooting contribution.
Tatum earned his first All-NBA selection in 2019–20, making the Third Team at age 22. He also made 189 three-pointers across 66 regular-season appearances that season. At the time, he was the youngest player in Celtics history to earn All-NBA honors. The first All-NBA honor arrived three seasons into his career, between his early supporting role and the championship run that followed.
In the 2024 Finals clincher against Dallas on June 17, Tatum finished with 31 points, 11 assists and eight rebounds as Boston won 106–88. His series averages were 22.2 points, 7.8 rebounds and 7.2 assists. The assist and rebound figures give a fuller picture of his championship contribution than scoring alone. Across all 19 games of that championship postseason, he averaged 25.0 points, 9.7 rebounds and 6.3 assists.
