The story of the Los Angeles Lakers

The Los Angeles Lakers are an American professional basketball team based in Los Angeles. The Lakers compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member of the Pacific Division of the Western Conference. The Lakers play their home games at Crypto.com Arena, an arena they share with the Los Angeles Sparks of the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) and the Los Angeles Kings of the National Hockey League (NHL). The Lakers are one of the most successful teams in the history of the NBA with 17 championships, second to the Boston Celtics.

The franchise began in 1946 as the Detroit Gems of the National Basketball League (NBL), and are one of only eight teams from the NBA's first decade that are still operating today. After one season, a new owner moved the team to Minneapolis, and renamed it the Minneapolis Lakers. The Lakers won the 1948 NBL championship before joining the rival Basketball Association of America, where they won the 1949 BAA championship. After the merger of the NBL and the BAA into the NBA in 1949, the Lakers won four of the next five NBA championships. After struggling financially in the late 1950s, they moved to Los Angeles before the 1960–61 season.

The Lakers made the NBA Finals six times in the 1960s, but lost every series to the Celtics, beginning their long and storied rivalry. In 1968, the Lakers acquired four-time NBA Most Valuable Player (MVP) Wilt Chamberlain, and won their sixth NBA title in 1972, led by coach Bill Sharman. After Chamberlain retired, the team traded for superstar Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Two big changes came in 1979; first, Jerry Buss purchased the Lakers and pioneered a vision of basketball as entertainment as well as sport. Second, the Lakers drafted Magic Johnsonfirst overall in the 1979 NBA draft. Johnson, a prodigy point guard, and dominant center Abdul-Jabbar became Lakers superstars. The promotion of head coach Pat Riley in 1981 and addition of forward James Worthy in the 1982 draft established the Lakers as an NBA powerhouse in the 1980s. The franchise won five championships in nine years, including two of three Finals matchups against the Celtics. The Lakers were defeated by their Boston archrivals in the 1984 Finals, but triumphed over them in 1985 and 1987.

The Lakers’ story spans Minneapolis origins and generations of Los Angeles stars. From dominant centers to the Showtime era and later championship teams, the franchise offers several ways to explore how NBA styles have changed. Its long rivalry with Boston is one of the league’s central historical threads.

Guide updated October 2, 2026: coaching, arena entry and trip-planning details checked.

Who coaches the Lakers?

JJ Redick is the Lakers’ head coach. Luka Dončić is on the current roster.

Going to a Lakers game at Crypto.com Arena

The arena is at 1111 South Figueroa Street in Los Angeles. Check the venue attached to your chosen game before booking travel: the team’s schedule distinguishes home, away and preseason locations. A Lakers listing alone is not enough to identify the building.

What can you bring inside?

Crypto.com Arena does not allow ordinary bags, including backpacks, purses, clear bags and fanny packs. Small clutches and wallets must be smaller than 5 × 9 × 1 inches. Medical and parental bags smaller than 14 × 14 × 6 inches are allowed through a separate X-ray screening process. A clear stadium bag that works elsewhere therefore may not be accepted here.

For larger belongings, the arena lists paid Binbox lockers beside the Kobe Bryant Entrance near the LA Kings Monument. Use the Binbox app for that service; do not plan on a conventional coat-check counter inside.

Parking and tickets

If you buy parking, have the digital parking pass ready at the gate. A purchase confirmation or receipt on your phone is not the entry pass. Use the official team ticket directory to reach the Lakers ticket seller and check the event-specific entry instructions before leaving.

Follow the Lakers beyond one game

The full Lakers schedule is the starting point for opponents, dates and venues. Open the roster section for player profiles, then check availability reports near tipoff. Training-camp membership and season statistics do not guarantee that a player will dress for a particular game.
