The Charlotte Hornets are an American professional basketball team based in Charlotte, North Carolina. The Hornets compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member of the Southeast Division of the Eastern Conference. The team plays its home games at the Spectrum Center.
The Charlotte Hornets franchise was established in 1988 as an expansion team owned by George Shinn. In 2002, Shinn moved the franchise to New Orleans, where they began play as the New Orleans Hornets, later rebranding as the Pelicans in 2013.
The team would return as an expansion team, known as the Charlotte Bobcats, in the 2004–05 NBA season. On June 15, 2006, Michael Jordan, a former NBA player and member of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame, acquired a minority stake in the franchise and became its managing member of basketball operations. On February 17, 2010, an ownership group led by Jordan purchased a majority share of the franchise. In 2013, following the rebranding of the New Orleans Hornets to the Pelicans, the Bobcats announced they would begin playing as the Charlotte Hornets in the 2014–15 season, along with reclaiming the history and official records of the original Charlotte Hornets, statistically making the Hornets one continuous NBA team.

Charlotte’s teal-and-purple identity became a recognizable part of basketball culture in the late 1980s and 1990s. The city’s modern franchise began play as the Bobcats before reclaiming the Hornets name in 2014. That naming history makes the official franchise timeline especially useful when exploring older records.
The original Charlotte Hornets began play in 1988, opening against Cleveland at Charlotte Coliseum on November 4. That first game ended in a heavy defeat, yet the crowd gave the team a standing ovation. Charlotte’s enthusiasm became a defining feature: the Hornets recorded 364 consecutive sellouts between December 1988 and November 1997. The early roster included Muggsy Bogues and Dell Curry; drafting Larry Johnson in 1991 and Alonzo Mourning in 1992 helped produce the first playoff breakthrough. In 1993, Mourning’s late jumper eliminated Boston and sent Charlotte into the second round.
That original team moved to New Orleans in 2002. NBA basketball returned through a new expansion team, the Charlotte Bobcats, whose first regular-season game was against Washington on November 4, 2004, again at Charlotte Coliseum. Emeka Okafor became Rookie of the Year in the inaugural season, and the Bobcats reached their first playoffs in 2010.
New Orleans adopted the Pelicans name in 2013, opening the way for Charlotte to become the Hornets again on May 20, 2014. Charlotte regained the original Hornets’ 1988–2002 history, records and statistics alongside its own Bobcats years. The New Orleans Pelicans retained their history from the 2002–03 season onward, including the temporary Oklahoma City seasons. Today’s Charlotte record book therefore connects the original Hornets and Bobcats eras; the shared nickname should not be mistaken for a modern team moving back from Louisiana.
For a game today, head to Spectrum Center at 333 East Trade Street in Uptown. This is the arena opened as Charlotte Bobcats Arena in 2005 and renamed Spectrum Center in 2016, a different building from the original Coliseum. The Charlotte Transportation Center is directly across Trade Street. Check the arena’s directions and parking page before travelling, and its A–Z guide before packing: even clear bags must currently fit the 5 × 7 × 1.5-inch limit, with listed exceptions.
Start with the official team schedule and roster to understand the current group. Then compare the team’s pace, shot selection, and defensive approach with its opponents. The meaning of a result changes with the matchup, the available lineup, and the season context.
Use the official team website for current news, roster details, schedules, and venue information. Arena naming and event arrangements can change; verify those details before planning a visit. Use the official team ticket links to plan your visit.
